From LA Apprenticeship to NYC's Finest

I didn’t wake up knowing how to pull a razor-thin lines, velvet smooth shades, and photorealistic portraits that still look fresh decades later. This is my journey from my start in LA to my years among the greats at Bang Bang to my private NYC studio.

2013 – 2022 ⟡
From Apprenticeship to Mastery in LA

In 2013 I took my first chair at Newport Tattoo in Newport Beach, CA. Those years were about patience: pulling hair-fine lines, watching how they healed, and listening more than I talked. The lesson stuck: precision matters long after the last session.

2022 – 2025 ⟡
New York & Bang Bang Residency

I landed in New York near the end of 2022 and earned a chair at Bang Bang. Those years among some of the world's greatest artists sharpened my fine-line and micro-realism game on a global clientele, and the studio’s pace pushed me to perfect real-time sketch-to-stencil collaboration.

2025 and Beyond ⟡
Private FiDi Tattoo Studio

Today I'm in a private studio in Seaport’s WSA building. Single suite, no foot traffic, and a calendar that never overlaps clients mean your tattoo gets my full attention. Reserve online, get reminders and direct access to text me if inspiration strikes, and arrive to quiet precision.

What I Offer

Why NYC Chooses Me for Custom Fine-Line and Micro-Realism

Single-Needle Precision ⟡

Most fine-line pieces start to fade after just a few years of wear. I use a 0.15 mm needle, low-trauma depth, and archival black that locks pigment exactly where it belongs. Healed photos years on prove my lines stay razor sharp.

Private, Appointment-Only Studio ⟡

Walk-in shops juggle noise, cross-talk, and ten timers at once. My Lower East Side space books one chair at a time so we can refine the stencil on the iPad without distractions. Clients call the vibe calm and focused.

Transparent Flat Rates ⟡

No hourly creep, no surprise at the end of your session. We will talk out how long things will take so you know what you're looking at all-in. That clarity lets you plan the piece and enjoy the process, not sweat the tab.

Easy Booking, Laser Focus ⟡

Lock your date online, leave a deposit and arrive to a calm, spa-level space that’s ready when you walk in. Need to chat first? A quick DM or phone or in-person consult secures the guidance you need with zero pressure.

⟡ Bring a portrait, mantra, or memory. I’ll frame it in lines and shades that last.

Fine-Line. Fast. Forever.

Let’s Sketch Your VISION

Meet Your Artist: Derrick Johnson, AKA Dr. Franklin

I’m Derrick Johnson, a New York fine‑line and micro‑realism specialist who believes the most powerful canvases walk out the door. Eleven years ago I traded illustration sketchbooks for a single‑needle machine, convinced that precision and storytelling could coexist in a single, weightless line.

I still open every session with graphite on paper because great tattoos begin with listening, not templating. From anatomy studies in LA to my residency at Bang Bang NYC, I’ve perfected a light‑touch technique that keeps detail crisp and healing quick, honed on 3,000 + healed pieces across every skin tone.

But craft is only half of the experience. My appointment-only studio stays intentionally private so you get unhurried focus, a curated chill playlist, and the confidence to relax into the creative process. When the stencil becomes reality on your skin, I want you to feel like the design has always belonged to you.

Wondering what to expect?

Straight Answers Before You Book

Micro-realism and fine‑line ink should never come with fine‑print. Below are the questions I hear most from NYC locals, cross‑country travelers, long-time collectors, and first‑timers.

What kinds of tattoos do you offer? Can I bring an idea, pick from flash, or request something custom?

I specialize in fine-line and micro-realism: think soft shading, hyper-realistic detail, and crisp single-needle line work. Most clients come with a loose idea or a photo reference, and we co-create the final sketch together same-day. I don’t work off flash or pre-set sheets; every piece is designed custom, on the spot, to fit your intention and the flow of your body.

How does your design process work? Will I see the design before my appointment?

Yes, your design session happens the morning of your appointment, side-by-side. You’ll come in with references, we’ll talk through your vision, and I’ll hand-sketch something grounded in your anatomy and scale. No back-and-forth emails or guessing games. Just clarity and collaboration, same day.

How does booking work? Do I need a deposit?

Booking’s fully online. Once you pick a date and fill out your intake, a $200 deposit holds your spot. That deposit goes toward your final total and is transferable if you reschedule with at least 48 hours’ notice. If you're ready to make it happen, schedule your session here.

When are you available? How far ahead should I book?

I typically open books 4-6 weeks out. That said, I keep a few short-notice openings each month, so it’s worth checking if you're trying to get in sooner. For larger pieces, it’s smart to book at least a couple of weeks in advance to get a time slot that works for you.

How long does a session take?

Small pieces can be done in an hour or two. Medium designs run 3-4 hours. For large-scale work, plan on 6-8 hours with built-in breaks and understand that bigger pieces like sleeves usually take multiple sessions. Feel free to book if you're ready. Contact me if you want to get an estimate.

Does it hurt to get a tattoo?

Most clients say it my touch is light. About a 4 to 6 out of 10 depending where you're getting tattooed. I make sure I apply the perfect pressure to get the ink precisely at the needed depth, no more. And we will take rest breaks whenever you need. It's your tattoo session and I'm here to deliver the experience you need.

Can I walk in or bring a friend?

I’m fully appointment-only to keep the space calm and focused. You’re welcome to bring one guest for support, but please let me know if you'd like to bring someone so we ensure the studio is set up for everyone to be comfortable.

Is it legal to tattoo at home in New York? What if I know a guy?

No, tattooing outside a licensed facility is illegal in most states, including New York. More importantly, it skips basic hygiene standards. Even if someone’s “good,” it’s not worth the infection risk. Plus, people working outside a studio usually aren't cranking out masterpieces. Always choose licensed.

Do you do body piercings in your shop?

No, this studio is tattoo-only. No piercings, tooth gems, or other services. It keeps the space focused strictly on tattoos that stand the test of time.

How much is a tattoo in New York, generally?

In NYC, most high-quality artists charge between $200 and $500 per hour depending on their experience and style. A completed tattoo can range from $500 to $5,000. Location is a factor, too. Studios in Manhattan and Brooklyn may price slightly higher. Just remember: when it comes to tattoos, cheaper usually means riskier, both in hygiene and in healed quality.

How much will my tattoo cost if I work with you?

It depends on size, detail, and placement. My hourly rate is $500, with a studio minimum of $400.

⟡ Tiny / Script (under 2 in.) ≈ $400 flat

⟡ Small Fine‑Line (2–3″) ≈ $500

⟡ Palm‑Size Micro‑Realism (3–5″) ≈ $1,000–$2,000

⟡ Half‑Forearm ≈ $1,800

⟡ Sleeve / Back Panel ≈ $3,200+

I'm happy to provide a full quote before we start sketching so there are no surprises. Just reach out.
